- REVIEW: THE USENET BOOK by Bryan Pfaffenberger, Addison-Wesley 1995
- ISBN: 0-201-40978-X paperbound 468 pages $26.95 USA $34.95 Canada
-
- This book is entirely devoted to USENET news and how to enjoy it to the
- max. USENET News is probably number two in net popularity next to
- e-mail. However, it is far more complex and THE USENET BOOK is the
- perfect manual to learn how to master USENET and some of the most popular
- news reader programs available on most public access Internet providers'
- systems, such as tin, rn, trn, nn and Trumpet for Windows. Actually there's
- documentation for ten different news readers contained in THE USENET BOOK.
- I never realized there were that many!
-
- Other areas covered include USENET accessibility through commercial on-line
- services such as America On Line, CompuServe and Delphi. There's a in-depth
- introduction to the 'dos and don'ts' of USENET - in other words,
- "Netiquette" - the guidelines or rules that can keep you from getting into
- trouble on-line and other information on USENET's values, customs and
- lore.
-
- THE USENET BOOK is a comprehensive guide to over 5000 newsgroups and
- features detailed descriptions of the top 300 most useful newsgroups which
- are rated using the "five star" system. In compiling this collection of
- the top 300 newsgroups Author Pfaffenberger has omitted those with
- advanced technical or scientific topics, fan, game and cultural newsgroups.
- Stats such as readership, rank, messages per month, crossposting percentage
- and availability have been included as well as information on the availability
- of a FAQ, archives and related groups. In addition, many of the alt.*
- hierarchy newsgroups have been included.
-
- Finally, there's information on how to become a USENET site should one be
- so inclined. THE USENET BOOK is well indexed, including a newsgroup-by-
- subject. This book is for anyone interested in the subject and USENET
- "junkies" will be pleased as well.
